Orthodontic Treatment for Children & Teens
When it comes to looking after your child’s orthodontic needs, we like to keep it simple and practical.
-
When can my child get braces?
We are happy to see children from as early as 7-10 years old, although they may not need any treatment straight away.
Some orthodontic problems are best treated early, others need to wait until the teeth and jaws have grown a bit more.
It is a good idea to get things checked out early so we can plan and keep an eye on your child’s growth.
-
Does my child need braces?
Every child is different and we would love to have a chat about what is suitable for your child and your family.
Some common issues we treat include:
Crowded teeth
Overbite or protruding teeth
Underbite
Crossbite
Thumbsucking habit
Adult teeth growing in the wrong position (ectopic)
-
What are some benefits of early treatment?
Early treatment may:
Build confidence.
Reduce the risk of damage to other teeth from an incorrect bite or teeth in a non-ideal position.
Often reduce the extent of treatment needed later in life.
Prevent tooth decay and gum disease because straight teeth are usually easier to keep clean than crowded teeth.
Adam offers a customised treatment plan after a thorough assessment of your smile and your concerns. Some options for younger children may include:
-
A device that is glued to the teeth to widen the upper jaw. This helps to correct crossbites and creates more space.
-
A small section of braces to help teeth to grow into the correct position.
-
This is a device that helps to correct the way the upper and lower jaw bite together. It may be removable or glued in as part of the treatment.
-
If baby teeth have been lost early, a place-holder is needed to keep the space open for the adult teeth to grow into later. The space maintainer may be removable or glued in.
-
Metal clips (brackets) and wires are attached to the teeth to gently move teeth into a new position. Traditional braces are an efficient option to straighten teeth. We can also have fun choosing different colours on them!
-
Similar to traditional braces, but with white ceramic clips (brackets) so they are less visible.
-
A series of thin clear plastic trays are fitted over the teeth which gradually move teeth into a new position. They are almost invisible and can correct many orthodontic issues. Some cases may not be suited for Invisalign.
Some options for older children or adults may include:
